Changing Pace
I wrote this ditty on the 24th December 2003, obviously on the verge of my annual Christmas nervous breakdown – with all the rush and bustle that we put upon ourselves each year. Working full time and only having the weekends to enjoy “my time” I feel this poem depicts how I feel a lot of the time. Over the last couple of years though I have made time for the things I really enjoy – I have realised that there is life after housework and a career.

All Things Poetic, Artistic, PhilosophicalOh how I dream of going slow,
Of shuffling along where ever I go.
Instead of running at my usual fast pace
As if I’m trying to win a race.
To have the time to catch a show -
Now that would mean I’d have to slow.
To even weed and mulch and mow
Without the rush and go, go, go!
To wander round the shopping square,
To see the girls about my hair,
To sit on a bench and, well, just sit and stare -
That is if I really dare.
To walk along the beach at dawn
Or lay about on a nice green lawn,
Stretch, relax and have a yawn
Without rushing around all forlorn.
To hear the birds with their chitter and chatter
And have nothing to do that really mattered.
Without the rush and the noise and clatter
Of typing, and filing, and sending that data!
Well I guess one day if I win lotto
Then I might have a chance to change my motto!
But until then I guess I’d better keep revving
Unless the good Lord calls me up to heavan!

I love it! This is exactly what I am thinking. Sometimes I can’t come up with the right words. You definitely found the words. Great job!!

Thanks Vonnie – I feel like this a lot – I’m always rushing around and everyone else seems to be casually strolling along so at the weekend I try to unwind as much as I can.
