One of the highlights of our Western Australia trip was to call into the historic convict gaol precinct of Albany. This beautifully preserved building is worth a look through. I found the prison cell area and the lady’s section of great interest. The top of all the prison walls is set with broken glass to discourage prisoners from scaling the wall to escape.

The gaol was built in 1852 and closed in 1940. In the 1960s the Albany Historical Society acquired control of the buildings where they based their research and began the long restoration work.
