Shale Works - Glen Davis NSW Australia

Bev Woodman

Valentine, Australia

Artist's Description

Another one of our forgotten valleys – Glen Davis is tucked in at the end of the magnificent Capertee Valley in NSW Australia. The valley forms a canyon that is larger than the Grand Canyon in width. The town became the centre of an oil shale industry, from 1938 to 1952 but was abandoned in 1952 because shale oil was not viable following the war. There is not much left of the town today but the ruins of the shale works still exist with tours conducted on a Saturday afternoon. There are unpowered camp sites on the town reserve with good amenities and hot showers and a cafe. For those who are looking for a more up market accommodation there is a boutique hotel that has been restored to its former glory.
This view overlooking the remains of the shale works was taken from the hill above where the actual shale mine once was. Here you will find the remains of more old buildings. On the left you will see the retorts and Naphtha stripping plant on the right.
