Old Shack - Hanging Rock, Nundle NSW by

413 VIEWS AS OF 7th July 2011

One of the many old mining shacks in the old gold mining area of Hanging Rock situated on the Great Dividing Range and overlooking the township of Nundle in NSW Australia. Gold was discovered in at Swamp Creek in 1852 and soon the area was invaded by miners keen to get rich. Hanging Rock has taken its name from the huge outcrop of rock that hangs above Nundle and is the site of the local lookout that offers amazing views over the Liverpool Plains. This whole area is amazingly beautiful with gold, zircon, sapphires and other semi precious gemstones still to be found in the rivers, creeks and rocks of the area. There are numerous cabins, a motel, B&Bs, hotel and camp areas. My favourite pick would be the camp ground at the Sheba Dams built for the miners at Hanging Rock to provide water for their sleuce boxes. Today its a natural campsite with bush toilets, picnic tables, walking tracks, fossicking and trout fishing. A must for anyone who loves to get away from it all and especially for the fossicker or historian.

Ah, another renovator’s delight, Bev! I love your rustic buildings, and this one’s a beaut; well spotted. That chimney is a masterpiece.

  • Thanks heaps for the comment … the chimney was neary as big as the room … maybe there was a little kitchen in that spot. This was such a tiny structure, the photo doesn’t show how small this home was. My hat goes off to the owners of the property for keeping it in such good condition♥

Mansion! hehehe. Great work Bev :)

  • I guess it was home to someone once and no doubt kept the snow and sleet away … thanks Julie for commenting♥

What a great find and your photo shows it off to perfection. With no distractions it depicts the scene pretty much as it was all those years ago. Excellent piece of work.

  • Thanks Peter … this is really a very tiny shack and looks larger than it really is. We kept coming back to it over the weekend to try different lighting. I had to stand in long grass to take this over a barbed wire fence but it was all worth waiting for♥

Amazing shot. and to think that this most likely was home to someone.. History is an amazing thing..So glad you captured this and entered into my group, thanks for sharing Bev…xx

  • Thanks Bernadette for your comment and for accepting it into the Tamworth & North, North West NSW Australia group. There is so much magnificent scenery in the area and this is just an example♥

Oh what a charmer ! Love it

  • Thanks Rosalie … I just couldn’t resist this one. My first shots were in light rain so I must have looked mad trying to lean over a barbed wire fence taking this … we went back a couple of times over the weekend and this was taken with clear and sunny skies♥ I might try a B&W version later♥

Great shot Bev! What more do you need when you live in the bush but a warm dry place to sleep and to cook.

  • Thanks Jade … I guess many of these miners didn’t even have a shack, most would have lived in tents. It was usually if they had a wife with them that they finally built something more secure. It snows in this area in winter so I can understand why the owner built it … I’m so pleased the current land owners have preserved it♥

Lovely Bev, especially like the way the close end sits at an angle.

  • Thanks Gary for the comment … it was a difficult shot to get as I needed to climb up a bank and take it over a fence … the house has certainly got quite a few sloping angles to it but more importantly its still standing for us to admire♥

Gosh Bev – you do this so incredibly well, capture the character and the essence of these places and then share so much information that brings it all alive for us once again. This is a gorgeous shot!!

  • Thank you Lianne and I just love to share these places with everyone. This area is rich in Australian gold rush history although a lot of people aren’t aware of it. My dad used to take me here prospecting and so this was a bit of a nostalgic trip back for me … and I wasn’t disappointed♥

What a great image. I passed through Nundle some years back. Nice.

  • Thank you Michael … and pleased you know the area. It hasn’t changed too much over the years although the roads are better than when we first started going there♥

These are the shots that artists like to paint. (a great shot for the kaput series) Beautifully composed and captured. Love it!!

  • Thanks Anna and yes no doubt artists have painted this one over the years. I’m not sure if its kaput enough but will keep looking♥
