Stories Around the Old Fireplace - Premer NSW by

783 Red Bubble views as of 28th December 2010

Oh what stories would have been told around this old fireplace found in “This Old House” in Premer on the Liverpool Plains of NSW Australia. This old timber slab home had seen better days but at some time had been lovingly lined with newspapers from at least the 1960s then wallpapered – almost gone now. The house appeared to have one bedroom and a lounge/kitchen with verandahs at the front and back. The whole house (or what was left of it had a wonderful feel to it, no ghosts appeared but it had a warmth indicating to me that happy times had been had here. Outside the prickly bush had almost surrounded the old house as if protecting it from intruders who may do harm – I didn’t class myself as an intruder … more like a visitor!

Oh Bev what a wonderful study of the old fireplace in This Old House. I love the colours, textures and composition, all enhanced and coloured further, brought to life by the back story. you have a real gift for and obvious love of the old and historical my friend, particularly the less lauded and more ordinary everyday in origin.

Such a joy to read and view, always!!! Brilliant, as usual!!!..xxxxOo

  • Oh! thanks Jan for the enthusiastic comment. I couldn’t resist putting this one on as it described the feel that was inside the old house. I think we all wandered around in awe of what once was and the atmosphere we felt here … no need to rush … just stay awhile and enjoy the company of this old house. I appreciate your input as always!!!!!

Looks great Bev. I could do with one of those tonight. I can just imagine the natural smell & warmth of the burning wood & those old newspapers must have been fascinating.

  • Thanks Michael for the comment and for prompting me to put this one up – I just hadn’t found time to do it. I think the old fire place held this end of the house together. I’ll try and put a few more up soon.

Kind of like what I was raised in Bev, except the fireplace was a woodstove but we cooked popcorn and sat around and recapped the day’s events and told stories. Excellent reminder of how life once was!

  • Thanks Jade for the comment and for sharing your memories. We were brought up with the old fuel stoves and in more modern times of my childhood an old pot belly stove – it somehow encouraged people to sit around and tell stories similar to our camping days around the open fire. Hang onto those memories, they are worth a million dollars.

Wonderful Bev. I would have wanted to sweep it out – must be in my genes. You do find the best places!

  • Thanks Helen for the comment and compliment. I’m not sure that sweeping it out would have helped this old one – a lot of the flooring was missing and the ceiling coming in, no doors and the windows missing … sounds almost like the song plus the dirt and dust added to the character of this one.

Great images, I notice that there are pictures above the mantle as well, they must have stuck newspaper under the whitewash and is now showing thru.

  • Thanks Anna for the comment and for favouriting this one – I do appreciate it. It was typical of early days to wallpaper the walls with newspaper to keep the draught from coming through the cracks in the walls. In some spots they had actually applied wallpaper over the newspaper as well – as you can see it was all coming off. This area above the mantle piece was probably in the best shape – maybe it was a more recent application although seemed to date from the 1960s.

Ohh..Bev…I love the ‘feel’ these old places can have!!! Its so special and hard to describe!!! Fancy those images showing through so clear above the fireplace!!! Wonderful to see it!!*-)
  • Thanks Deb – I particularly liked this image because it showed the newspapers so vividly – I should have documented some of the names on the wall – it was reasonably easy to read.

Great to see this Bev, I can understand why you were so taken with this house.

  • Thank you Enivea – it had a great feel to it although very dilapidated. I usually feel a cool presence in most old buildings but this one just felt warm and friendly.

Wonderful character here Bev, I look forward to seeing more of this..

  • Mandy you would have loved this one – it was very special. I nearly jumped out of the drivers seat when I saw it – we were out of the car and under the fence within seconds.

Oh what a wonderfully taken photo Bev. You still can feel the warmth that place must have given to the owners. Great narrative, good reading.

  • Thanks John – I loved the look of the old fireplace and the old tin chimney outside is another one I will add (as soon as I can decide which image is suitable).
