I thought this image showed how diverse the region of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie are. Once thought of as a dirty industrial city, the area no longer bears this label. The magnificent beaches, river and lakes are an adventure wonderland for the locals and the tourists who are steadily finding this area a wonderful destination. Redhead Beach is in Lake Macquarie that sits side by side with Newcastle and is just north of Belmont. Redhead is renowned for its huge cliff face that blocks it from Dudley and beaches further north but from Redhead it is then a clear run of beaches clear through to the Swansea Channel – the mouth of Lake Macquarie. Here in this shot I have captured the surfing fun that has always been part of Newcastle’s culture, the beautiful gentle waves and clean water … and one of the many coal ships that sit of the Port of Newcastle waiting to load coal for the overseas market.
