Maitland Gaol 1844-1998.
By the 1830s in the new Colony of NSW there was an urgent need for a walled prison system to house those who committed crimes on Australian soil. Gaols were planned for Darlinghurst, East Maitland, Parramatta, Bathurst, Goulburn and Berrima.
Construction for the Maitland Gaol began in 1844 and was completed by 1855. Throughout it’s tough history the gaol was witness to 16 executions, the last being in May 1897.
Today the gaol is a popular tourist destination and you can take a self guided audio tour of the complex or join a fully guided tour by past inmates. The venue can also be hired out for functions and sleep overs – very popular for ghost tours.
