Can't Wait for Summer - Newcastle Ocean Baths by

This is just a little fun shot – the two seagulls sitting on the wall are saying “Boy I can’ t wait for summer, there’s no fun here at present and a good feed of chips wouldn’t go astray”.

The Newcastle Ocean baths were built around 1911 in an art deco style facade. The baths are currently empty, drained for the renovation but will hopefully be open for the summer season. The sea wall in the photo has steps carved into them and as a child I spent many a happy time sitting on these steps cheering on my school swimming carnivals. There are many happy memories of being brought her as a child to cool off in the heat of summer. I’m sure the baths would stir memories in many during their lifetime.

This shot taken with the Nikon D80, 55-200 mm lens, hand held on 2nd August 2008, mid afternoon sun
Ideal as a gift card to bring back memories

I take back my question about the water temperature! Great shot.

  • Yep – bone dry at the moment other than for the waves washing over – I might post that one next. Thanks for your comment – love it.

My mother learnt to swim here and I used to spend many happy times here when in Newcastle visiting my grandfather. Thanks for the memories Bev. I so have to get up there soon, I have one of my aunts and cousins still in Newcastle.

  • Thanks Raquel – I thought you would comment on this one after what you said about the canoe pool. It brought back so many memories for me too – with the advent of chlorine pools we somehow don’t go to the saltwater pools much anymore – must put that on the list for summer. Make sure you let me know if you come up this way.

I really like this one. It reminds me of the old baths at Kiama which are now filled in !

lol. I look a little different to old photo but my hair grows really quick and can go from a crew cut to the new look within a year !

  • Thanks Steven for your comment – I remember the old Kiama baths. Your new shot looks good

    This is an excellent photograph.

  • Hi and thanks for the comment and pleased you liked the shot. I went past last weekend and the baths are now full, somehow it didn’t look as good.

I stopped by to look at this one a little larger than the thmbnail, as it’ lines and vibrant yet muted colours and tones caught my eye.

It’s even better viewed larger! Did you know that?

Your sotry and description provide the perfect setting, enhancing this simple, captivating shot.

Love the old, nostalgic feel you’ve captured.

    : )

  • Thanks Jan for this comment – I’ll have to go and check out the larger view myself. They refilled the baths a week after I took this one so I was pleased to see it empty. We swam there as kids and all my life I have never seen it without water.
