Bird of Paradise
I came home this morning early from the fish markets to find that my Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) is now in flower – the first for this season. This flower always intrigues me and I find the brilliant colours so captivating.

Thanks Jade – you were quick. I have one bush near the front door and more down the back including the giant version too thats a totally different colour. I must take a walk down there later to see if these ones are in flower. This one virtually opened up over night.

What a beauty and I don’t know why we have never got one for our garden. When we lived nearer the city we had a couple of them and they were almost as gorgeous as this one of yours. Wonderfully well taken Bev and you have shown it at it’s very best. Peter
Bev Woodman replied
Thank you Peter – I love your comment. These plants are very easy to grow, they virtually look after themselves … and the flowers are magnificent.
Kylie Reid
Lovely colour Bev, like the soft background also. Well done.
Bev Woodman replied
Thanks Kylie – I actually took this with a 55-200 mm lens and it provided a great depth of field.

Thanks Woody – this is such a challenging flower, the colours and its many hidden mysteries!!!!!!!

Lovely colors of a lovely flower, Bev. I especially like how well the background works with the subject matter. Very nice!
Bev Woodman replied
Thanks Clark for this great comment. I took this with my 55-200 mm lens as I came home from an early morning trip to the markets (naturally camera in tow) and took a chance on it – I’m so pleased with it.

Bev Woodman replied
Thanks Jacquei for commenting on this beautiful flower. Mother nature worked her best with the colours in these plants. I can’t wait for my plant to mature so I will get a larger display of flowers. Thanks for the favourite too.

Beautiful image of a beautiful flower!!!..Love those colours!!!*-)
Bev Woodman replied
Thanks Deb – I agree the colours were spectacular. I have another one taken very early in my days on RB and its no where near the colours of this one. I did take this in very low light so I think that brought out the colours more than bright and sometimes uneven sunlight.
Sue Wotton
Stunning shot, Bev, did you increase the saturation a tad?
Bev Woodman
Hi Sue – I took this shot at about 7 am on Friday as we were heading back from the fish markets. I was amazed to see it had opened up over night so I grabbed the camera and just clicked about 6 shots off. Later when I checked the setting I actually took this on the ‘sport’ setting with my 55-200 mm lens, 1/25 shutter speed, F4.8, focal length of 120 mm and an ISO of 400. I bumped the red & blue saturation only a tiny notch and then adjusted it in Layers/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask and this gave it a little bit of texture. Its funny how you can take all the care in the world with some shots and not get the result you wanted and then with this one I took it on the spur of the moment and I love it! Thanks heaps for asking Sue and for commenting.
PPV247
Captured beautifully Bev. Love these flowers also. Might have to take a photo tour of your garden I think.
Bev Woodman replied
Thanks Pete for the comment. There is not much else out in flower at present – I’m just heading down there now to do some cleaning up, Phil already has the mulcher going. You’re welcome anytime.

Thanks John – its such a beautiful flower. I was a little worried as mine hadn’t flowered … but then overnight it all happened … such a nice surprise on Good Friday to find it had opened up.
Kimberly Miller
This is almost too beautiful for words Bev. The colors are fab and the background colors mesh so completely well with the color of the flower. Luck you to have this in your yard. I’ve always wanted a bird of paradise. Hmmm, send a person a clipping or two? LOL
Bev Woodman replied
Hi Kimberly and thank you for this beautiful comment. It is such a beautiful work of nature, the shape and colours, and this is only a small bush yet. Next year I’m hoping for a larger display. I have planted another three down the backyard plus I have two of the giant variety – their flowers are huge but not as colourful.
Mary Ann Reilly

Bev Woodman replied
Wow!! thank you Mary Ann for this feature and comment – its very muchly appreciated.

Hi Colleen and thank you for the comment and the favourite of this one. I actually purchased this one myself as a card recently and was so impressed with Red Bubble’s production of this – the colours remained as brilliant in the card as on screen. Thank you again.
