Waves over the Canoe Pool - Newcastle Beach NSW

Waves over the Canoe Pool - Newcastle Beach NSW

With the high winds of the last couple of days, the surf along the eastern coastline has been huge. This shot was taken from Newcastle Baths looking across the canoe pool fence and south. Newcastle Ocean Baths with its art deco pavilion dates back to about 1911 and is one of Newcastle’s outstanding historic landmarks and is a popular open air studio for amateur photographers. Currently the pool is empty and the pavilion is undergoing restoration however it is still a top spot to capture the magic of the sea. The canoe pool next door is a shallow oval pool – when I was a child it had a map of the world on the floor of the pool and I found it fascinating to walk ‘all over the world’. Taken with the Nikon D80 using a 55-200 mm lens.

Lovely contrast and nice rich tones. The cool blues set the rich earth tones off so nicely!

  • Bev Woodman replied

Thank you Lynda for your positive comments – this was taken about 3.30pm so the late afternoon (winter) sun seemed to enhance the colours to my advantage.

  • Bev Woodman replied

Lynda – I missed saying in my previous reply that only a few minutes from this shot, across Newcastle Harbour is our lovely STOCKTON – I note you are from Stockton USA. Our’s is just a small ocean/harbour town that has been preserved for many years because of the lack of direct road access to it. In years gone by you had to either go by ferry or punt – the punt is gone now and there is a bridge a little bit further up the river so the town has started to boom.

  • Bev Woodman replied

Thanks Trudi for commenting – most photographers around Newcastle attempt a shot here and I was so pleased with this one – I took quite a few and made a few mistakes but it pays to shoot them from as many angles as you can and I was so pleased with this one – I have another portrait shaped shot as well that I may post at a later date.

Hey, Bev. Sound like your Stockton is making progress…I think mine is headed downward. Besides, yours is much more photogenic than mine. How fair is that? Can I change Stockton venues? I’ll pay my own way.

  • Bev Woodman replied

Come on down – next time I’m over in Stockton I’ll get a few pics for you – its right on a beach that stretches for 9 miles – pure clean golden sand – beautiful rolling surf, a delightful harbour and a short ferry trip across to the big smoke in Newcastle – had enough?

Thank you for this wonderful compliment and for favouriting this one. I have taken quite a few in this general area of Newcastle Beach. I went in there yesterday as the weather has been wild however it was too choppy and too wet to pull the camera out.
