Sunday 7 February marks the first anniversary of “Black Saturday” 7//2/09, when a tragic series of bushfires engulfed Victoria, Australia.

173 people died in the conflagration, and more than 78 communities were, and remain, affected by the aftermath of the fires.

I wanted to create something that captured the intensity of that inferno, but that was also attractive to the senses. So, rather than a photo of blasted landscape I’ve made my own.
Should there be any sales of this image, all profits will go to the Red Cross (of which I am a member), for use in Victoria to continue to assist the victims of those fires.

Astonishingly, this image has uploaded perfectly well, after days of failure with others. An omen perhaps?

A larger version can be uploaded if necessary – it would look spectacular as a large print!

Simply beautiful Bev – and what a lovely tribute..
Tomorrow will be a day of very mixed emotions for those affected both directly and indirectly by these savage infernos…
A time to reflect on the great personal loss – but also a time of celebration – of triumph – of overcoming the challenge and rebuilding lives, towns and most of all memories.
I believe the hearts and thoughts of most Australians will be with those remembering this anniversary….

  • Yes, it will, Sharon. It was a terrible day and the effects will be felt for a long time. Thanks for your support and kind words.

it’s a beautiful piece of work. The fires of last year were the first I’d ever experienced (not first hand) since I landed in this country. I recently visited Marysville and was saddened by what I had seen and what I had not seen and missed that had been lost to the fires. Bruno’s art and sculpture garden was almost lost to the world.

  • Thanks so much Mia, for your lovely comment and the favourite. Yes, it was a terrible. Even living where we do, in an outer NE Melbourne suburb, had the wind not changed the fire would have reached us.
