My lovely neighbour Liz, whom you all met from the wedding images I’d posted some time back, works at Wellgate Community Farm
A few weeks ago Liz came home late … cold, hungry & tired … she’d been called back to the farm ’cause the new addition had been delivered … a little calf called Jacob
I decided it’s time I headed out to the farm & had a little look at what a city farm looks like and how it functions and how it serves the community etc etc …
All in all a very interesting experience for me … I used to do farming insurance whilst living in South Africa … went to the Royal Agricultural show every year, listened to talks about cattle, and sheep and milk and meat, weather and grain, drought and rain … I’ve walked across maize fields hammered and destroyed by hail … walked through abattoirs … been given 10kg bags of potatoes to take home or some eggs or milk or fresh chicken …
My visit to the community farm was a whole new experience … where animals have names and chickens get powdered every six weeks to get rid of the fleas or mite or whatever they get …
Kids walk about in gumboots helping with the chores, learning that milk does not come out of a carton in the big fridge at Tesco’s but actually from a cow … that honey is made by bees and bees collect pollen and … etc etc …
I thoroughly enjoyed morning at the farm … I shall certainly return, camera in hand, for the next function there, when the next lot of babies are born, or simply when the weather is a touch friendlier than today :)
I had a blast with some of these shots & shall share some here … More can be viewed in the gallery I’m compiling here

LMFAO…
That startled ‘flash glare’ look ;o)
lol … :) except I hate flashes, especially close-up on things with eyes, ’cause it just ’aint nice …
She actually just got fascinated by the clicking of the shutter … a few minutes prior she looked terribly bored!!!
light source from a window behind me and a door to my right …
amazing what cranking up the ISO can do … except of course the noise is a nasty side effect … noise reduction tool shrinks the file size massively … maybe I really should start shooting in RAW …

HI Bettina anohter great shot from you hand.
And you’re right, he looks a little superior – while he looks down at the photographer.
Greetings
Jens.
chuckles yeah … I’d stepped off a ledge & was kneeling (careful not to kneel squarely in poop) and tried to make myself as small as possible & look up at her … she became quite fascinated with my strange antics … so fascinated she even forgot where she was & slipped off the ledge!!! I thought goats are sure-footed things!! ;)

Glad you had such a great time, this little Goat is a beauty. On my way home from work, I travel through lots of countryside, and I pass this little house that has too goats. A young man works on the farm behind the house and every day this goat stands on a fence and watches this young guy walk away home, I swear that goat misses this young guy, it’s so cute…. every day. If there was somewhere to stop and take a photo of this I would…..so precious :))
oh Karen … that is such a lovely story!! I do hope you find somewhere to park & get a shot or two :))

PS … goats just have such character, don’t they? :))

Awesome capture Bettina. Love the eyes.
:) I reckon it’s the eye & those pursed lips …
as she was looking down at me like that I was having a giggle telling her that the pose is perfect and she should hold it & keep that look going …
a father and his daughter had come in behind me … they looked bemused at my enthusiasm & commentary … chuckles … must have been a sight and a half I guess …
anyway – thanks for your very encouraging comment Don :)

lol you survived the camera strap and any other clothing being eaten then? ;) Years ago friend’s farm had goats who were known locally as Steve and McQueen for their ability to escape and eat everything they found. Wonderful angle
