When I first got my new camera, an Olympus E-410 I had to try out lots of things, particularly shots inspired by out artists here on RB. So I had to try out water drops, I was pretty happy with my first attempt using food colouring. As I was lucky enough to get 2 different colour drops. I never thought to put it up, but when I saw the Homepage pic, thought ah why not. So here is my first attempt. Not tried it since. But I am sure I will some day.

Take lots of frames, take hundreds of pics and you will be amazed what you will come up with. Just experiment with different shutter speeds and keep the shots going while one of you kids keeps dropping water!. Oh, next time I will definately use a tripod, am I sure I would have had an even better result with one.

What a fantastic shot! When I saw this last week, I though ‘I’ve got to have a go at that!’. Well, I did, and failed. I spent a good couple of hours at the weekend trying to do this with my son patiently dripping water off his hands into a bowl of water. Just couldn’t catch that ‘right’ moment.
Any tips? lol.

Other than what I mentioned above in response to Nala, here is the Camera settings for this particular image:
Shutter Speed: 1/180 second
F Number: F/5.6
Focal Length: 86 mm
ISO Speed: 400
The image is cropped and I probably sharpened in Photoshop.
I was lucky, and it is far from perfect. I do not have indoor lighting so waited for a bright day and set it up near the window and used natural light, and even then the image is a little grainy. I have only tried once since, and I think only one worked out, out of probably 200-300 shots and then it was not good enough to post. Tried milk and food colouring actually.
There is info in the forums of the Macro Water group, I have not been through them myself(must have another go myself – but Winter and dull dull light) link to Group: Good luck!

Thanks for the inspiration Betha. I am just getting used to a new camera and I am very much in the experimental stage. All your little tips above are very helpful and lets just say I can’t wait for the kids to get home from school ! Thanks Again.

excellent shot, but have you though of using diffirent coloured gels rather than fod colouring :) might give you bit more flexibility, in fact i might give this a go myself, what was the settings that you used?
