I was flying out of Heathrow late one afternoon when I noted, out of the window, glints and gleams of light reflecting off glass and water as we passed by London as it started to get dark. My first thought wasn’t WOO! ALIEN INVASION!, but I did wonder whether I’d get lucky enough to catch sunlight glinting off something particularly momentous, like London’s Shard, currently the tallest building in Europe. I also wondered whether perhaps this was the moment I regretted having the shorter more economical 40mm prime on the camera I took for carry-on (rather than, say the larger 70-200mm).
As it turned out, yes. Also : yes.
That said, the glints of light reflecting off The Shard through slightly streaky aircraft windows really do (to my mind) look like something is being fired upon from somewhere. And that’s pretty cool, even from insanely long range (Check out the other plane on the far left!)
Best seen large. As in : larger than you can see onscreen. But smaller than it happening in real life. I guess.
Here’s a link to the full size image . Yeah, grain and motion blur – but I still think it kind of kicks ass. (you can click on it and get a pop-up, or you can right-click open in new tab and see it slightly larger…. also good)
