The other shot I took of JJ Abrams at the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness might be a better candid shot that gives credence to the fact that he’s a brilliant director who has all but saved two (and hopefully soon three) floundering franchises with his brand of brilliantness.
Which is true.
But this photo-edit is all about the Lens Flares. You gotta love Lens Flares (in the DVD commentary for Star Trek 2009 it was explicitly mentioned as one way to overcome the inherent ‘but it’s not real’-ness of sci fi to mimic (or perhaps over-mimic) the optical effects of real glass lenses. Subconsciously the less-than-perfect lighting is perhaps interpreted by the mind as evidence of perfectly flawed reality.
Plus they look cool in moderation….
