European Anarchist (milk and two sugars)
Okay, so I waited until after the G-20 summit to post this, just in case I was wrong.
Basically, in the lead up to the summit, the British press were making it their appointed job to scare the populace into the apocalypse waiting for us when the world’s leaders came to London to talk about the global financial crisis.
There’d be carnage, there’d be riots, there’d be public destuction the likes of which you couldn’t imagine unless you rolled the events of Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 28 Days later and Mad Max together.
Because… wait for it…. European Anarchists were even coming from the mainland to cause damage and disruption.
In the end, one bank was stormed, some 88 people were arrested, and on any given shot of the protests the number of people with cameras seemed to outnumber the people with signs and placards by a dozen to one.
So… was it all just a calculated fear campaign to give the police carte blanche and scare normal concerned people away from the area? Or are these dangerous anarchists not quite so anarchic after all? Are they, indeed a lot more refined than anyone had previously thought, or possibly hoped?
Next time there’s a major globalisation summit, could the Anarchists please identify themselves beforehand? Thanks!
