Madagascar 2 Premiere, London

Less than a week after snapping HRH Queen Elizabeth II herself in Leicester Square, the fans were out again for the Premiere of the Dreamworks animated film “Madagascar : Back2Africa”. The forecast for Sunday over the past five days had alternated between possible snow (!!), sleet (!), heavy rain and light rain, and as it turned out the weather limited itself to the latter two. However, rain and premieres are uneasy bedfellows at best.

With that in mind, here’s how it went:

Madagascar 2. The stars were all there, except David Schwimmer. Which is odd, because seriously, what’s he done since the previous Madagascar??

“Sorry, kids. Notice the lack of opposable thumbs? We ain’t signing nothing!”

This lady seemed to think that Ben Stiller had the power to bless babies. She must have stood there for a minute – he’s not the Pope, lady!

Ben Stiller, signing a cheque made out to the Derek Zoolander Centre For Kids Who Can’t Read Good And Want To Learn How To Do Other Things Good Too. (My K10D is weatherproof, repeat, weatherproof)

Jada Pinkett-Smith. Will Smith is her husband, she was in the second and third Matrix films, and provides the voice of a hippo in this movie. (My 50mm lens does get a bit close to celebrities at times…)

A few centimetres closer and I would have been looking for a new camera…

Jeffrey Katzenberg, He’s one of the founders of the studio that made the film, making him a BIG celebrity turn-up. Funnily, I don’t think the Paparazzi knew who he was!

All the fun of a rainy evening premiere (check out the murderous face of the security guard at the bottom!)

“Is he listening? I’m not all that much of a fan of Zoolander, actually. A Night at the Roxbury, though, pretty awesome” Yeah, except Ben Stiller wasn’t IN A Night at the Roxbury..

Turn Around. Turnaround. Turn. Around. Turnaroundturnaroundturnaroundturnaroundturnaroundturnaroundturnaroundturnaround! (I didn’t say it, but I was thinking it…)

Best anticipatory sniping shot ever- Mister Chris Rock, ladies and gentlemen!! (Thank you Mr Rock.)

Meanwhile, other celebrities included Top Gear host Richard Hammond.

Some Guy. I think he’s tagged on wireimage.com but his name escapes me. I’d like to think he was the dude who played MacGuyver, but I doubt it.

Some guy. Lineker-something? There was a lot of screaming and the name sounds slightly vaguely familiar. Soccer player? Darts player? Olympic steeplechaser? Who knows, but…

“So then I severed the carotid artery and he bled to death… wait. Perhaps this isn’t the place to discuss that…”

Yellow Cap Guy update : he was in attendance.

And then, somewhat sodden and soaked, I went home for dinner. Not a bad night, all things considered.

The next scheduled London premiere is for Baz Luhrman’s ‘Australia’, however right now it looks like I’ll miss it because our departmental Christmas party will be on the same night. Aargh!! Free food or free celebrities… where do my priorities lie??

Past Premieres:
A Bunch of Amateurs- Royal Screening
Quantum of Solace
How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Tropic Thunder
Righteous Kill
RockNRolla
The X-Files : I Want to Believe
The Dark Knight
Wall-E

Yeah, I enjoy going to them. Crowd spirits are generally high as well, and many of the celebs seem fairly happy to meet at least parts of the crowd. They’re better in summer, though, when there’s more light (and it’s not so cold!)
