Scott was born at 26 weeks weighing 960grms (2 pound 2 ounces) in October 1998
He was in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) for a 2-3 months before he reached a stage where he could be transferred back to the local Hospital, All up he spent 3-4 months in Hospital..
He was brought home on Oxygen and a monitor that kept an eye on his breathing, Gradually over a few months the oxygen was reduced and finally he was off, no more nose canulas and carting around oxygen tanks on the back of the pram, and no more strange looks from passers by…
2 weeks after Scotty turned 1 his little sister (Allanna) was born at 38 weeks (Phew!)
Physically Scott was very strong but it wasnt long before I realised there was something wrong.
His sister (Allanna) began talking but Scott couldnt By the time Allanna was saying short sentences Scott was only managing small words..
After running a few tests I found out Scotty had a learning difficulty.
We were told that he may not even be able to go for a Drivers licence which totally broke my heart…..
I got him into pre school and then into Early Intervention.
The Lady who runs the early intervention told me later on in the year “at first there was no way I could allow Scott to start Kindergarten but after a few months of learning the routines and the rules I can happily allow him to start Kinder in the moderate/severly disabled class”
He started Kindergarten and is now in year 6!
every 6 months they do a review with both parents, teachers and councillors to see how we can improve things with Scott.
Scotty has gone from the moderate /severely disabled class to starting High School next year in the Mildly Disabled Class..
He is still a few years behind, Whille Allanna is reading Harry Potter books Scott is reading at a level of year 1-2, His Maths is around Year 3 and his writing is around year 2-3 Levels, His speech is coming along well too although we still have the occassional word we dont understand.
He still has a speech therapists and an occupational therapist,
All in all is doing really really well, he is quite popular with a lot of kids at school and has receive many awards from his school for a variety of acheivements, he participates in Eistedfods and plays, thrives on learning as much as he can about his favourite things which include, Space, Dinosaurs and Facts like what is bigger, who is the tallest, who is the strongest…
He has a beautiful heart and has actually brought teahcers to tears with his kindness. and as you can tell from his photo he can be very cheeky..:)
I hope you have enjoyed reading about him and I would love you hear your comments*
