Ancient Milano tree
I was working in Italy, Milan for some time and rented a cheap apartment in an old Milan styyle apartment block with a huge noble tree filling the central courtyard with its higher boughs reaching the rooftop level of my place. I would open the shutters at night to cool the place down and leaves would blow in which I collected and brought home with me to the UK. 5 years on one leaf is still with me. I hope the tree is still OK
This place is protected
Yet this place is free
Where people live and come and go
Or linger by the old tree
Standing tall over this cobbled ground
Surrounded by the the tenemant block
In this old Milanese yard
Forever grounded with roots that search and delve
Penetrating deeply into the origins of this lived in place
Wondering and listening to the resident chatter in Italian summer night
Chatter that echoes through the walkways of this ancient domain
And whilst the people will always fade away
You will remain
Steadfast in your delving
Deep in ancient memory
Keeping natures library of every spoken word
Busy in a faithful bonding
Of Sun of Light of Wind and Rain
Oblivious to the dangerous rythm of human co-habitation
Where; when the last soul shall leave
And this dwelling is levelled to the ground
It will be the end
If you could walk old tree
I would ask you to follow me
On the path to the ancient forest
Where you will know what it is to be free.

Ooh I so Love this poem. I am the steward of an ancient Tulip magnolia and this is what I wish she could do—walk with me to a meadow where she could be forever free.
Love, love these words.
