UnTubed!

Featured in All In, Editing.

Waves are mathematically precise in the way they break. Exactly HOW they break depends on the size, strength and direction of the swell, the wind and how the wave interacts with a reef or sandbar.

It’s the sheer beauty of the ocean that led me to use Illustrator to recreate its beauty, opacity, reflections, clarity, colour and mathematical precision in vector format. The original photo was of a wave (sans surfer) on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia. Beautiful place.

This is the nearly fully-vectorised version of my earlier image, “Untubed Again”, (which was partially created in Painter and called ”... Again” because I’ve made many unpublished versions). Created in Illustrator and Photoshop. It was printed and mounted onto 100cm x 140cm foamcore from the original Illustrator file to retain maximum sharpness!

Thanks, Deborah! I just had this printed at 40” x 56” – straight from the Illustrator file to keep the vector lines nice n’ sharp.

Have you ever thought about putting down the mouse and picking up a brush and redoing one of your works on canvas?
Scary at first but bloody liberating.

Wow! Synchronicity or what?! Waiting for my wife in a craft store on the weekend and I spied a 36” x 48” canvas, primed, framed and on special … it’s now waiting in my studio to be covered one day. Yep, pretty daunting about what medium to use, but I know what I want to paint on it, at least! Thanks for the suggestion … I see you wrote this before I read it! :)

  • Casey Herman replied 26 days ago

What kind of medium would you suggest if I wanted to do something like this, ReoSurf? I’d love to do something like airbrushing, but from having once painted a car, I realise it’s not so easy. But the thing is, I’d like to ensure that I get nice, sharp lines – probably the opposite of the smooth flowing of the ocean’s waves.
