I made this image tonight in two stages. First I photographed Liam with my trusty 50mm with two lights behind and either side of him. This was the easy part. I then thought I would try and photograph some smoke. After much hunting around for incense sticks, finally found some and spent over an hour setting up with a flash and taking lots of photos to choose from. I then used photoshop and composited two of these smokey ones with Liam and voila.

Thanks Rob. It’s nice to get a comment from an accomplished portrait artist as yourself… I just checked out your folio quickly. Nice stuff , I will have a better look when I get home. Cheers Ben
Wow Ben, this is fantastic, very much a pulp fiction style shot – the lighting is great and you’ve done a wonderful job with the composite, I would never have known except that you told us (although I did wonder at first what you do to your kids for your art, lol). That big curl of smoke in front of his arm really creates a 3D look to it. Great! What sort of lights are you using?
Thanks Trish. It means a lot getting such good comments from yourself..I must be headed in the right direction.
The lights for Liam are two 350watt equivalent fluoro lights in soft boxes. They are a continuous light that I used to use for product photos and video stuff. They are placed just out of frame as they have a small throw of light. The light quality is really nice fwhen close to the subject.
The smoke was shot with one speedlite 580 ex from the side.
Thanks for the lovely comment Hearher, it’s very appreciated. I haven’t seen your work before till now, I will have a better look later…on first glance it looks impressive, so your comments are most welcome.
This ROCKS Ben! I never would have known that this was several shots put together! Either way, you have created a wonderful mood here and this is so worth your effort!
Thanks Shelly! It was a lot of fun and spur of the moment but well worth the time.Sorry I replied so late, I didn’t see your comment, I am sure it was’t here when the rest were. Red bubble site is acting a little strange.
