Borderline

This shot was approx 8 minutes @ f8, ISO 200 with ND4 grad filter.
Taken about half an hour before sunrise at Sandgate, Qld.
I calculated the exposure by taking a shot at f4 ISO 3200 and multiplying it out.

Nice colours dude. What were your calculation steps to get back to the settings you used?

  • bensound replied

Thanks bud. There might be other methods but the way I was taught was to take a test shot at 3200 with a wide aperture like f4. So this shot was properly exposed with those settings at 8 secs.
So if you want f8 ISO 200. You count the stops to your ‘destination’ settings. So 3200 to 1600 is one stop, 1600 to 800 is two stops, 800 to 400 is three stops, 400 to 200 is four stops.
Now keep adding for the aperture too, f4 to f5.6 is five stops, f5.6 to f8 is six stops.
So now you have six stops difference between the test shot settings and the actual settings you would like to use. So you have to add six stops of light to your shutter speed – 8 secs to 16 secs is one stop, 16 secs to 32 secs is two stops, 32 sec to 1 min (approx) is three stops,
1 mins to 2 mins is four stops, 2 mins to 4 mins is five stops, 4 mins to 8 mins is six stops.
So there you have it, at ISO 200 f8 you need a shutter speed of 8 minutes.
Phew hope that helps, cheers mate !

8 minutes for an ND4 and would have been longer at ISO 100. Awesome. did you get many hot pixels? Great composition, Ben, but the lights on the left?

  • bensound replied

Thanks very much Peter, love your work. I think there was one lone hot pixel somewhere on the rocks which I got rid of in PS, yeah the lights on the left are Redcliffe, a bit distracting there on the edge of the frame I guess.
