fantastic shot Benjamin – I can’t say I’ve ever seen snakes mating before – heard about it though. It’s really interesting. I don’t think I’d be that close!!! Had to take some pix of copperheads and a tiger snake caught by the local snakecatcher for the paper and I was so greatful for zoom and wide open spaces no obstacles in the way of me running away squealing.

thanks so much for your comments!
By the way…..one thing you don’t see on the picture is that there was another
olive tree on the right (like 3 metres away) with a tied horse. You can imagine
how nervous it was. Fortunately the snakes turned to the left…:)

I thought the tree was quite interesting and only noticed the snakes when I clicked through. What great timing.

Just out of interest, are they definitely mating? I know very little about overseas snakes, but here in Australia the pictured behaviour is only exhibited by males in a form of ritual combat. They try to push each other to the ground, with the stronger (and fitter) male eventually driving the weaker male away. Snake mating is far less exciting (for us – I’m sure the snakes enjoy it!).
