I photographed Mark ‘Chopper’ Read at the Old Melbourne Gaol during a promotion he was doing for his own music video clip last year. He agreed to a portrait in one of the nearby cells. I was acutely aware that I was standing in a prison cell, one-on-one, with one of Australia ’s most notorious killers and criminal characters. I calmed my nerves and took advantage of the tension, asking him to take off his shirt for this completely raw photograph. The light and the simple accessories were perfect, allowing for this very real and powerful result.
