I like the simplicity of the first version, but I I think I prefer this version for it’s “grungy / rustic/ asian” feel. I makes me think of Japanese samuri swords for some reason. I like the inclusion of the browns and the frame which helps to keep the focus inside the image, rather than following the lines out.

i think so too. i like this grungy feel, i think there are far too little grungy pics in my oeuvre… time to change that! ;o)
