This is where I resided 12 days in October 2012. Harlem. A beautiful, quiet, almost provicial place. I don’t know anymore if our apartment is visible in this picture, but it was located at the far left… If you want to spend a few days in New York City, I’d recommend this as a place to be:
Sugar Hill

WOW! You have no idea of the memories this image has flooded my mind with, Benedikt…..I remember taking the train into the city and rumbling past Harlem, I was at a very impressive age and was so struck with the poverty I saw…I even wrote a piece about it…several years ago. This is truly wonderful….and is SO NYC!

  • oh no, i may have no ideas of YOUR memories, but i have several images and imaginations and memories by myself that are surely comparable to yours. i can empathize with you. ;o)
i don’t know about the poverty in harlem, but i know much violence did take place in this borough. i think harlem still IS the equivalent of violence (and poverty and more related problems) to most of the people. wrongfully. it’s so beautiful there. if i could make a living there, in new york, i’d choose harlem or greenwich village (the quietest and most romantic places in manhattan) or brooklyn as a place to be. if i could ever afford it, that is. lol.
what do you mean with “piece”?

When I refer to an image I often will call it a ‘piece’…as in a piece of art! I haven’t been through Harlem in many years…but, can imagine that it has become a violent place as well as a poor one. Poverty and hopelessness seems to breed violence, unfortunately. I have been to Greenwich Village several times…a wonderful place for an artist to live! And…Brooklyn always reminds me of my favorite book when I was a young girl ( still love it!)…“A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”….wonderful and is a movie as well ( an old movie!)…

  • i thought you meant a piece of music. ;o) which seems very suitable, too. the new york history, escpecially harlem’s, is full of music. i learned a few instruments, composed even little pieces with the help of several computer programs … but i didn’t think of writing or composing a piece of music in reminiscence of new york. maybe i should try it though.
i know “a tree grows in brooklyn” – but neither the book nor the film. being a huuuuuge film music fan, i only know the beautiful music composed by the late jerry goldsmith. i posted several clips of music on youtube years ago, but they were all deleted (and my old profile as well) due to copyright infringement.
but gladly, i have found something small. enjoy! :o)
