Artist's Description

This beautiful fall on the Guide River was the subject of tourism from the 1880s. In 1898 it was envisaged as the site of a plant for the Hercules silver-lead mine, which would have used it for motive power to drive machinery. In 1922 a Stephen Spurling III photo of Guide Falls was also used to illustrate the industrial might of Launceston, which was powered by hydro-electricity: ‘white coal’.
