help please...

I have to design a business card for myself and haven’t got a clue… Obviously I should use one of my own images (as I’m supposed to be advertising my own photography) but I really don’t know what to use??? Please, please could someone – anyone point me in the right direction… Do I have anything in my portfolio worth using or should I try and take some more photos and if so of what??? I’m guessing the image should be quiet simple, yet eye catching so the text stands out… If anyone has the time to have a look through my photos and let me know which ones they think might be suitable I would really, really appreciate it…
I’m not really sure what type of photography work, but I tend to like ‘people’ shots, so I guess it would be more towards portrait work…

I think you have many pieces in your portfolio worth using.I don’t know much about making business cards but I think Isabelle #3 or Isabelle#5 would look absolutely lovely on your cards.
    Peace.

I don’t know much about this either…but if you’re doing all types of photos for your business, I’d suggest “Grass” or “Surfing at Sunrise”. If you’re doing portraits, I agree with Bridgett, Isabelle #3 or Isabelle #5…Leanne #4 would work, also, with white text in the black area of the image. Best of luck with the process!

Depends who will print your cards.
If a professional printing company, then talk to them. Show them your work and they will give you advise what works best with what letter type and the amount of text on it.

I really like Isabelle #4 and the Bride (photo of your sister) I think they are absolutely stunning. I think it does depend on what the client wants, show them a few of your best ones and let them pick. Good luck!!

Louis or Belle would work well, or Leanne #4

A simple, strong image works well on a card. Anything with fiddly details, or something where the 55×90mm size doesn’t do the image justice can be counter productive. We’ve done a few photographers corporate ID’s, and nice simple typography on a simple image always works best.

Good for you Nicole…obviously having your own cards is an exciting step in your photography career!
I had the dilemma of which photo to use when I did mine too, but my personal preference was to avoid using my own children as the feature photo. One reason was because I didn’t want to favour one child over the other (they’d never forgive me, lol). But also, I just felt it might look a little more professional to use an image of someone elses child. Again, this was just my personal preference…it’s probably not really that important! It just needs to be an image that you’re intensely proud of, and something that clearly represents the style of work you want to be known for.
    Have fun!

I think one of your isabelle shots would be really good. Try using three layers of different opacity and align and offset them – that would look really nice and of course the low opacity of the graduation would allow your print to go through it – just a thought, if you need a hand or cant visualise it – just Bmail me

I should have also added that the best image for a card is not necessarily your favourite photo – its the image that best tells the story of you and your work.

Hope I’m actually being helpful here!

The problem is I have only just started this ‘photography’ thing this year and LOVE it! So I’m not really sure what sort of photography I want to do. Obviously my children are my inspiration and I enjoy portrait work but I don’t really know where I am headed… This is what makes it so hard.

A different idea is to use a couple of different images on different cards so if someone wants a portrait…you can give them a card with a portrait on it, if someone wants interior work you give them one with that on it…etc…my stepdaughter Amanda did this and it has worked well for her…weddings is another obvious category! Bubblemail her if you like…AmandaCole I’m sure she’d love to help you out :):) Good luck :)

Nicole…....... I am doing the same thing now. I have made a few of my own but still I am looking around. I found this web site

    http://photogvendors.wordpress.com/

if you look to the right you will see a link for business forms and one for business stationary. You can get a ton of idea from them or order one of the template packages and make your own.

    Also (my favortite)

    http://pinkinkstudios.com/shoppe/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_4

check out their business kits….. I really may go with their black and white design.

Good Luck and I hope you share what you go with!!!!!!!

Well Nicole, I’ve been through the same sort of hell. So here is my wisdom (lol)
    1. Cards are small
    2. The image should be iconic and grab you
    3. A Black card is preferable with white or red lettering. Why? Because it highlights the image and white is sooo boring!

As for images, I only found two:
My preference is “Self Portrait” because it is strong and fesisty.
My second is “Blue Eyes” – once again. because of all of the above and also’ like “Self-Portrait” it is minimalist.
Keep in mind, it’s about an Ikon or “grab”.

Oh, make sure you get it professionally done. My opinion is that a glossy finish is best for photographers.

    Regards
    John

Nicole, I’m not sure a photo will work well on a business card. Unless it’s a glossy card.

Nicole….....i’m on my second design. The first was a plane black card with just an emblem and contact details, it didn’t work. The present design is still a black card with white writing and a three quater photo of a bride and groom. This is alot better, if i was you i would go for a black card, use a professional printing company and use white writing. Use a good quality card too (not too thin). There are several photos of yours you can use, i would use leanne no3 or even your own id photo. Whatever photo you decide to use i wouldn’t use any borders but blend it into the actual card. Good luck, Paul.

Did u get a card made?

I requested that the RB folks develop it on the site promotion area.

Staples might be able to work with you on it.
