I'm going to live the life I sing about in my song

On Collins Street today
Jumping over a puddle
With the mirror of the city
Staring up at me

I tripped

And a word flew

Out
Of
My
Mouth

I reached out to catch it
But it fell through my fingers
And slid
Down the curve of
My long red boot
To tumble between the crack
Of the path
I was treading

I thought I caught sight
Of the hood of an S
And the tail of a G
And I wondered just why
On this gray, gray day
The world was telling me
To sigh

Because I already know
How
To
Do
That

But the dot of the i
Peeked above the crack
And lifted the whole glowing word
To the surface

And I saw

That
My
Message

Was
Sing

I'm going to live the life I sing about in my song

Artist's Description

Today, I listened to gospel for the first time in months.

I smiled for the entire tram ride.

I’m still smiling.

The glorious Mahalia Jackson

The footage is a little grainy, but the voice is superb…I particularly love those swaying back and forth and clapping at the end. This is the song I want played at my funeral.
