to the year of water off my back

My spine is extremely straight, and I tend to hiss.

Gets kinda tiring.

For Lisa & Jess, who deflect my arrows with love and humour, and who gave me the resolution for 2009:
Be like the duck, and rethink the crumpets

If I do learn not to fire up so easily, can I skip the crumpet part?!

to the year of water off my back belongs to the following groups:

A New Aesthetic.... Divine and Otherwise , Lesbian and Bi-Women's Art, Melbourne & Victoria, The Word Tree and WMG

I reached for my pen this morning
The silver one, heavy with cherry ink and ripe stories
And saw written on my palm
One word

I sat with hand open & eyes narrow
For I don’t recall writing it
It doesn’t fall easily from my pen
Or my wary mouth

It’s a word of hope and trust
But I’m a woman prepared for war
And I can’t quite work out
How it found its way into my clenched fist

And when I see the pen cap
Lying next to your pillow
I know you’ve written me a wish
For the coming year.

I’ll whisper it to myself
Until I’m brave enough to say it
Out loud

And lay my weapons down.

YES

i like how you tell about character through this poetic narration.

  • bellmusker replied

Thanks for that; I tried to keep it short and sharp, so I’m happy to hear the character comes across, even with all her flaws.

Trust…...one of the hardest things in the world to gain, and hold….fear and faith go together in too many people’s minds…..

    sorry….tag surfing….

You have revealed a great deal with this short and sharp note, Bell. I wish you luck for letting that water flow in 2009!

  • bellmusker replied

Ah Mel, it’s a lesson I’ve never been able to master….probably because I’ve never been willing to truly leap. All the best to you in 2009 – and keep up the tag surfing, it often brings rich rewards!

Wonderful wordsmithery! I can totally empathise…... except I really like crumpets, especially with butter and honey!

  • bellmusker replied

Oh no, no, no….crumpets are just so…wrong. Jess & Lisa spent ages analysing this fear last night (and yes, wine was involved!), and when I heard myself spit “they’re just so needy”, even I was surprised. They need to be filled; they can’t stand alone, and I despise that.

Not my most rational thought, hehehe.

You’ve taken many leaps I wish I’d been able to attempt, and no doubt there are some I’ve taken that you would allow to pass…..I think we’ve all tested ourselves many times, if we think hard enough…...one day I’d like to taste cherry beer…...

meanwhile I’ll keep surfing the tags, thank you:)

oh beautiful bell. despite the thorns and barbs or the explorations of monsters in the dark, your writing always feels to me as though it is generally thrashing (in protest?!?) over an undercurrent of yes. even though your words spit and hiss with the wrath and venom of no, they lose their battle time and again at the omnipresence of certain girl of bells yes. when i think about the terrain you have crossed and distances you have travelled… to open your palm now and find the cherry red word of hope, i imagine you leaving a trail of downy feathers behind you as strut on into the new year. plus, being a duck gives you certified cause to waddle anytime you feel like it. so. get your duck on gorgeous girl. the crumpet part won’t be so hard xxxx

  • bellmusker replied

Oh sweet girl of the holly, no-one has ever urged me to ‘get my duck on’! But it makes perfect sense coming from you and bring tears of laughter to my eyes….....there is an undercurrent of yes in my writing, I agree, and this piece is me using my ink to stop stamping that urge down.

Whenever I try to be brutal, my damn hand keeps turning my pen the wrong way and writes me bravery instead of cynicism. I don’t think I’m complaining.

    But no crumpets! Evil little things,hehe x x x

  • jemimalovesbigted

    jemimalovesbigted

hmmm I see your point… I had never thought of them that way before…. thank you for opening my eyes to the foolishness of appreciating crumpets… I shall sneer at their hollowness I walk by them in the supermarket from now on!! x

  • mstrace

WOW. oh my, wow. Bella bella bell…this is simply stunning.

What similar universes you and I spun for ourselves across a stormy sea. I spit and I rage and, as I’ve often been told, am too opinionated and direct for my own damn good. I DETEST the color pink and things like country music and doilies give me the heeby jeebies (but then again, so do cockroaches, but that’s another story). This piece you’ve written here – it makes me shake with a desire to shed my own fear and loathing. Sooo let’s you and I drink a bottle of wine when you are here in the States and promise to discuss those intricate inner demons of doilies and crumpets.

For now, my gifted little writer half way around the world, you just tattoo that word YES on the inside of your mind and like some thrumming incantation, let it surround you in the utter…beautiful… infinite…possibilities of you.

  • bellmusker replied

Ah, a woman who also rails at bizarre and innocuous objects – a wench after my own heart!! When I sit by your side in the US, downing honey martinis and wearing our highest stilettos, let us have a ritual burning of the pink doilies. Imagine those cackles carrying across the waves!

whispers But babe….will have to disagree on bluegrass music…..you know how I love my cowboys ;-)

  • Luke Downes

    Luke Downes

I used to be afraid to bend, scared I’d just break and then have to start picking up all the pieces of me. Again. So, it used to make me very angry when other people asked me to bend or, worse, willed me to bend. But the spine is meant to bend. I turned 30 this last year and sort of just shed my old skin, wasn’t even much of a concious decision.

I say to you: be like the duck when it’s right. Be like the snake when it’s right. But sometimes you have to be a bull. Or a pit bull.

Oh, ok: I have a control issue and I refuse to allow the actions or negative energies of other people ruin my day. Because, subconciously, that’s just what they’re trying to do. And I can’t have that: just throwing the game and letting them get their way.

(Besides, people just hate it when you stay calm and easy in the face of their anger. Of course, it comes with a price: they try to shake you up more often. But it’s worth it, when you’re lying in bed, considering the day and you get to say to yourself: “You didn’t let your temper flare up once today. Good for you.”)

*Are crumpets biscuits, basically? If so, I’m with you…they are needy.

  • bellmusker replied

You’ve given me food for thought; as is your way, I’m learning! I have intense control issues & they do not enrich my life (although they did make me a damn good dominatrix at one point, but that’s a whole other story!). I’m not just talking about rage, but also fear, and the flexibility that allows you to embrace new cycles.

For anyone with a mental illness, fear of losing control takes on a sharp metallic edge that you can taste in your sleep. If I do snap – and I have – I’m so afraid I won’t be able to pick up my pieces and regenerate. But you know Luke, I do…I always have…..so why not just close my eyes, and leap?

You and I both know why not, but fuck it, I’m going to do it anyway.

And in case I waver, you sent some snakes my way, bless you. Yep, be like the snake when it’s right...and that includes shedding skin when it’s time to do so.

    Like now, perhaps.

You’ve kicked off 09 with another inspired and intelligent piece of writing here Bell.
Love the narrative.. and you let a little light creep in on this one!
You know, if you keep raising the bar like this Bell you will need all the hope you can muster.
    Brilliant*

I’ll stick to holding up the bar ;)

  • bellmusker replied

How can I not try and hold the bar high when a certain someone writes a recommendation on their myspace site that has a certain writer blushing to the roots of her flaming hair?!

Your faith in me has put the pen in my hand on more than one occasion, Leith. I can’t thank you enough for that, my friend.

A little light, hey? Shining it on my page tends to make the words come out richer…something I’ve only just learned, hehe.

Bluegrass and old country is TOPS in my books – I just really loathe the country pop crapola…ya know??

Well, Duckie, does YES mean YES? I enjoyed the piece – a LOT. Surface flippancy; undercurrents of all sorts of things and those duck legs paddling furiously underwater/out of view! V successfully intriguing – that YES. Could be to so many possibilities. The relief at subject’s being able to lay down defences is palpable. I felt so tense for her! Thanx for the work.

Thanks so much for your lovely comment; and what an intriguing way to find my work! This piece brought me into 2009 with a head held high, and so far, there have been quite a few opportunities to say ‘yes’, most with glowing results. And nothing better than dictionaries, hey? :-)
