So I’m ready for a writers’ meeting…..are you coming along?
I’ve been hosting the Melbourne writers’ meetings for about two years now – the first Sunday of every month sees us gather at a beautiful bluestone pub in the inner suburbs, to get to know each other, swill wine, and discuss words and all their wonder. Sometimes it’s a casual gathering of eight or nine, other times it’s twenty bubblers with cameras flashing and cackles rising into the Northcote evening. Sometimes, however, it’s only a handful of us, when other commitments take up time or things just get in the way. Also, some people maybe aren’t aware of the fabulous writers’ forum in the Melbourne and Victoria group, and don’t know about the meetings in the first place.
So this journal is for those interested in meeting other writers, and a reminder for those who haven’t attended in a while. As writers we’re not the main focus of this website and can tend to get lost in the shuffle, but I’m hoping that these meetings help make our presence known. And at the very least, you get to sit in the sunshine and chat to other scribes…..highly recommended!
Here are a few images from meetings over the years….

The lovely Jess Tremp.

Myself, Holly Ringland, Yasemin Sumner and Luckyvegetable

Ah, modern writers…..Chris White doing a reading.

The October meeting is next Sunday, and details are here. If you haven’t come along before, now’s the perfect time to begin. And if you have come along but not recently…get your arse into that beer garden next week and be prepared to cackle!
Also, I’d like to mention that I’ve been asked to co-host a new group. If you head on over to The Red Writing Room you’ll see all manner of resources and inspiration for writers, whether you’re new to the craft or already published. Myself and my lovely co-hosts are excited to keep it bursting with information and opportunities, and hope you can find some inspiration there.
For those coming to the meeting, just look for a flame haired wench with a red notebooks and a whiskey in front of her…..it might look something like this:

Lisa Jewell
You know I’ll be there :))

Me too Roy – would love it but will have to settle for “in spirit” though I might lift a glass of whiskey in honor of all you fabulous writers!!

If only….if only…..broomstick is in for repairs….
bellmusker replied
Damn those broomstick mechanics….they take so long! :-)
Steve Strodder...
tempted to fake ID it…
bellmusker replied
I think you can come into a pub if you have an adult with you, right?
Lisa Jewell
Cal,

Wish I could be there! Would LOVE to not only visit Melbourne, but to meet everyone in person!
One of these yearsBell, order me a whiskey straight and a beer of your choice. Also, if you’ve never had a cream of tequilla, you must try it!bellmusker replied
What the hell is a cream of tequila? How I love the sound of that!

I’ll be there :) i keep missing it because of having other things on but i can make this one
bellmusker replied
Great to hear! :-)
markgb
Well maybe I should invest in some bubble wrap and send you a bottle. Imagine Bailey’s Irish Cream tasting like tequilla…mouth watering yet
bellmusker replied
I can only imagine….in LA, Ms Trace took Helen and I to her local bar and introduced us to Cadillac Margaritas, without the margarita mix: tequila and Cointreau. Suffice to say, I was in heaven.

I’m (still) based in London – can I defer an rsvp for sometime I’m in Melbourne? (I have sunglasses, a book to recommend (‘Anathem’ by Neal Stephenson) and I can bring my own preferred liquor. And ah… but my little red notebook is actually black! A deal-breaker, I suppose…
bellmusker replied
Hmmm…..maybe we can make an exception for an overseas bubbler – black notebooks allowed!! Seriously, if you do happen to be in Oz it’d be fabulous to have you at our table. Imagine the Iceland stories, flying thick and fast!
msdebbie
Such a lovely way of inviting everyone Bellmusker xoxo
I will definitely make it to one before 2010, but unsure at this stage if it will be the one on Oct 4.
Sounds like a delicious way to spend a Sunday xoxo Deb xoxo
bellmusker replied
Thanks Debbie, what a lovely thing to say. They happen once a month, so I’m sure you’ll be at our table in no time :-)
