Shaggy Scalycap by Bellavista2
Clear

Found this Giant-normous Mushroom,Toodstool, Fungus…growing out of the end of the log that was left by our creek. My husband and I left it there as a seat to sit on and watch the water go by. Well this fungus grew out of the end…’Amazing hey?"

Shaggy Scalycap (Pholiota squarrosa)
Fruiting bodies: September – November
Area of infection: roots and trunk base
Wood decomposition: white rot
Comment: This is often confused with honey fungus.
Effect: Weak parasite – Vessels become interrupted – thinning of the crest and flaking of the bark – dying of the tree.

    this guy is just SPLENDID! i’m running through my books to read about him….wish I had a log to have ones like this grow on it!

  • Howdy Carla! Wonderful to see you in my little corner of the world. Thankyou so much for your lovely comment. Fungus are so fascinating to read about, the ones on trees mean the death or slow death of a tree. I love my log by the creek, I am happy to leave him there:=]

    not ALL on trees are killing them……..but lately most of the ones i’m seeing locally ARE killers: Hen and Chicken fungi…Many of the polypores that are running down the sides……..i was just out yesterday with an arborist and our local parks guys talking about some of their trees that they’ll be loosing thanx to this kind of life cycle. are u sure u don’t wanna share that log…just for a season or so? lol

  • Thankyou so much Carla for the information, fascinating stuff! I did not know any of that. I guess I don’t mind sharing the log, seeing it already dead, just hope no fungi grows on Fruit Trees, being as its battle to keep the Deer and other critters away, let alone Fungi. Have a wonderful day Carla :=}
