I think its really good. I like how you adapted something like hokusai into a more edgy anime style, while still looking old school. The paper background is a nice effect, very dramatized.

  • KillerNapkins

    KillerNapkins

this is an awesome piece of art .. what is it done with?

  • Nicolas Rix replied

    Hey KillerNapkins,
    Thanks for the comment.

This was done in pencil and ink on paper.
    Scanned and colored in PS7.

The effects I used was a tiled style baroque wallpaper for the background.

I used a scanned creased paper, put it on the top layer and used overlay (I think – was a longtime ago).

The weathered effect is just a selected splatter – then I moved it around and cut away various parts.

The muted colors was done with color saturation and messing with the color balance settings.

loving this piece real nice a keeper
    i like work like this
how did you do this may i ask

  • Nicolas Rix replied

    Hi colorblind :)

Step 1 -> Like all my work I start with a pencil and ink drawing, scan…open photoshop -> I color it in 3 to 4 tone “animation” shading. The background is a stock pattern, which was tiled.

Step 2 -> was adding the Zen symbol, which was an ink and brush done on paper…scanned in and positioned. The blood type splatters where done exactly the same way, just filled the ink splatters with a red color.

Step 3 -> I flattened the color and linework layers. Opened a random textured image, made a selection with the magic wand tool. Moved that selected over to my color+linework layer and did some random deleting of different areas to give it that weathered look.

The white marks is a random ink texture – inverted the layer, then set the layer to “Screen” mode, to allow only the white to show. Then I lowered the opacity of that layer slightly.

Steps 4 -> Got a damaged piece of paper that was scanned in and simply set the layer to ‘multiply’ mode. Then…flatten the whole image.

Open ‘Levels’ window and move some sliders around to improve the contrast. Then I opened the ‘Hue and Saturation’ window and lower the saturation slider by around 20%. Which further enhances the vintage coloration.
Lastly I use Color Balance to move the color range to the more green/blue side.

Any more questions, don’t hesitate to bubble mail me :)
