Battles
Castle Kilchurn on the banks of Loch Awe, the site of many battles in Scottish history.
The McGregors were the dominant clan in the Loch Awe area until being eclipsed by the Campbells who built Castle Kilchurn in 1450.
The Castle was held by the Campbells for 400 years and became a government stronghold in Jacobean times, but with the pacification of the Highland Clans and the dispersal of the McGregors, the Castle outlived its usefulness.
The Castle was abandoned completely at the end of the 18th Century and then had the misfortune to be burnt out after a “lightning strike” Most likely a stray McGregor…

Wow – amazing. The light across the grass in the forefront really adds a nice dynamic to the brooding darkness of the castle and the sky. Fantastic! Thanks for the history too.
