Wedding Day

On our drive to the courthouse we witnessed
an elderly man wobble on his old-fashioned bike
near the ditch, where weeds brushed against his sensible shoes.

While you applied the brakes for the stop sign
I stared mutely, hand outstretched as if to prevent the inevitability
of the old man’s fall:

a slow motion teetering, as if he’d suddenly forgotten
how to balance.
I held my breath, falling with him,
willing him to regain his balance or
at the very least to fall gracefully,
no bones broken
so that the day of my wedding
would not be ruined;

so that later I would see no symbolism
in an old man’s wobbling fall
on the day that I exchanged one name
for another.

I knew even before witnessing an elderly man’s clumsy wobble that my marriage was a huge mistake.

you have me smiling…not for the tottering old man..but for the symbolic nature of this…I had ducks quacking mockingly in the background …it was doomed for failure also …great write :))

  • It’s probably worth noting (though I couldn’t figure out how to include it in the poem) that I wore black that day. Who wears black to get married in? Sheesh, I was so clueless!

very poignant write….the universe is sending us signs all the time ….we just don’t notice or choose not to. Loved the imagery you created with your words. :-)

  • Thank you Lisa. Yes, there are clues all around. I was much younger then and not adept at reading the clues or even at knowing what my heart most wanted.
