The Passing

The Passing

This is the final image from a series or 8 artworks depicting the Rites of Passage through life from Conception to Passing. It represents the serene essence of humankind leaving the material form of the body and passing over to the next realm of existence. The form itself is a spiral formed from the perfect harmonious spiral formed from the ‘Golden Ratio’ of sacred geometry that is the basic form of all that exists.

This work has been created from handmade papers and organic materials from the rainforests of Northern NSW, Australia

Wonderful piece – your paper is great – do you make it yourself or obtain it locally?

    Hi AlteredIllusions,

A bit late in replying, but for everyone who is wondering, yes, I make the paper all myself, primarily from a combination of Mulberry, Hydrangea and Banana fibre, combined with whatever I might find laying around the rainforest floor. The materials are soaked and boiled for around 12 hours, then stoneground by hand, simmered some more and re-ground. Finally, this ground fibre is added to about 30% recycled paper pulp to assist in binding before the individual sheets are ‘pulled’ and air-dried on stone slabs. I make the individual sheets fairly thin and light, and then laminate anywhere from 3 to 6 sheets on top of each other using an organic glue. Between the layers I add a whole lot of other material ranging from semi-composted lawn clippings to rust scrapings and fruit pulp, etc. As the layers slowly dry, the fresh organic material breaks down and the colours ‘bleed’ through the paper to the surface creating a whole range of colours and textures. The images that I create onto (and into) these surface are largely determined and influenced by the nature of the surface itself, the materials used and the region the materials are sourced from.

Blessings always and thank you all for the kind comments.

I love this one – I’m really drawn to it. Maybe ( on reflection) it is because there has been too much death and loss in my life of late – - but I see hope in this image – it’s very organic.
