The Black Pit

Feels like aaages since i wrote anything poem-wise so here it is

The Black Pit belongs to the following groups:

All Things Poetic, Artistic, Philosophical, Art Students and Beginners, Atheism and Experimental

Inside my head sits a small,
shruken,
old man;
eyes tight shut
hands clamped to the sides of his wicker chair,
old cap pulled firmly down to blind the non-existant light,
jaw clenched so as to make no sound.

This man wears an english rose shirt,
and flies an irish flag,
and shows he has clear commen backgrounds
in his worn shoes
that have seen much toil
but refuse to be cleaned,
although money shows in their old good fashion.

The old man refuses reason for his cup,
but instead drinks the bitter brew of
faded memories, regret and
pride which
match the colours of the bulldog,
and the shamrock and the
shoes.

He sits along in a dark empty space,
with the darkness pressing at his eyes,
his mind;
he is scared,
poor man,
at what once was that now is lost,
and what was found to take its place.

Who can blame him.
Who can blame him for shutting his eyes,
clenching his jaw and refusing to move,
or think,
least he be reminded.
Who can blame his most human virtue of
cowerdice in times of struggle.

But in order to live well,
i must press this old man further into his dark hole,
where he becomes more scared,
and irrational,
as i become freerer,
and more alive;
i soar up as he is buried down,

Down, deep within me,
though leaving his taint,
which i wear from time to time,
with pride,
untill the faded memories bring regret,
and then i recover sense,
and drown him in the black pit wrought by his ways,
his time,
his ties;
but not by him.

    Brilliant words!!! Fear is what keeps most humans on this earth from taking the leaps of faith that might set us free to soar. JFC, I just hope to hell I never become that man.

    it’s hard letting go of who we were or for that matter who we are… but as we journey forward sometimes the past is better left there… to someday revisit though.. when we are ready to learn from it…....... good writing beast….... well done…........b

    You have lovely imagery beast – a very nice way with words. Very nice rhythm and flow to this provocative piece young man – you are already a very talented poet with a great deal of insight! Well done!

    I think what you described here is a constant struggle between our fears and the darkness and our desire to be happy and free. The way you compared these two components was very imaginative and unique. I think this struggle is such an important one and your words are definitely proof of that.

  • beast replied

    The struggle is important and im glad you you think my words reflect this. I do however think that we need the struggle and the fear, as well obviously as the freedom and happiness, as too much of either side would lead to a life lacking, we need the experience our fears offer us. Thanks for reading, take care,
    luke
