a year in haiku

19-01-08
a friend challenged me
to write a haiku a day.
anyone else game?

20-01-08
mud cakes to your hide
on the banks of the river
hippopotamus

21-01-08
two pieces of fruit
rot in a bowl on the shelf.
i throw one away.

22-01-08
leaves fall on my house
like i fell on your doorstep.
time will sweep us up.

23-01-08
red groom stands alone
winter wind teases his hair
she is not coming

24-01-08
we wish to advise
that we will no longer stand
for your insolence

25-01-08
blue groom wearing black
cleans his nails with a feather
turns his face away

26-01-08
i let my guard down
someone stole my prize pumpkin
won’t happen again

27-01-08
fan spins lazily
over the purple sofa
painted eyelids twitch

28-01-08
the three musketeers
quit not, nor will they relent
D’Artagnan makes four

29-01-08
words tangle my tongue
students fume indifference
and itch to be gone

30-01-08
junk mail in my box
despite the warning sticker
cheap pizza be damned

31-01-08
the night comes on slow
tyres squeal on bald bitumen
january ends

01-02-08
strangers packed in tight
eyes an inch away from mine
staring right through me

02-02-08
abandoned keystrokes
too many words left unsaid
untyped, unspoken

03-02-08
english breakfast tea
taken strong and hot with milk
add sugar to taste

04-02-08 – (inspired by voices adrift at 2am)
no, i won’t calm down!
call the cops then, i dare ya
like anyone cares

05-02-08
this is all your fault,
he said to the janitor,
who threw his mop down.

06-02-08
So many soldiers
with nothing to do but dance
barefoot in the grass.

07-02-08
her eyes sparkle still
but in someone else’s night
shining on, like stars

08-02-08
bird woman paces
red backpack low and swinging
fat conductor stares

09-02-08
the world is spinning
and never have i noticed
more than today, love

10-02-08
please submit by mail
expression of interest
resume attached

11-02-08
it’s now or never
i’m my own worst enemy
and other cliches

12-02-08
abandoned summer
bleeding white at the edges
sky burns perfect blue

13-02-08
Fluffy stalks night birds.
He only hangs around here
Because you feed him.

14-02-08
the box lid lifts free
inside the bones of a bird
on red cellophane.

These haikus are so amazing, so well-thought out and wonderfully constructed. Your friend’s challenge was well-placed. Here’s one, but it doesn’t match your depth:

    Dinner is burning
    Chatting away on the phone
    Hmm, might need some salt.

  • bearhat replied

Thanks, Natella. depth, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
