This started like any of my other illustrations, a pen drawing in my visual diary. But the closer it got to completion, the more I felt it needed something more… maybe something incorporated into it, or as a background. I initially thought ink splatters and I may still experiment further with it, but as I experimented with my current ink splotches, and how it interacted with the illustration (layers in screen mode) I really liked how the bottom illustration layer interacted with the splotches and went further with it.
I kind of wished that the red ink would contrast into black more, but that may be a future experimentation.
During the production of this, I ended up with about 8-9 A2 layers and combined the different patterns in different ways to come up with this final background image.
I really enjoy making different ink styles for backgrounds so I may further work on this one. It may be a work in progress, but I like this particular version.
The ink doesn’t look much like blood, but I thought it was a bit of a fitting working title.
