Artist's Description

This is the remnants of the Ha-Ha wall at the former Mayday hills Lunatic Asylum at Beechworth. This is on the insdie of the walls, which once circled some 25 hectares without a break. Not much of the wall remains these days, but it is a very haunting and intimidating construction.

A Ha-Ha wall is a high wall that is built in a ditch so it is not seen and does not spoil view of those residing within the walls. The people inside would think that there are no walls or fences to keep them in and if they escaped from their confines of the buildings, they would then come across the hidden wall… ha-ha!.
