Ha-Ha wall

Ha-Ha wall

This is the remnants of the Ha-Ha wall at the former Mayday hills Lunatic Asylum at Beechworth. This is on the insdie of the walls, which once circled some 25 hectares without a break. Not much of the wall remains these days, but it is a very haunting and intimidating construction.

A Ha-Ha wall is a high wall that is built in a ditch so it is not seen and does not spoil view of those residing within the walls. The people inside would think that there are no walls or fences to keep them in and if they escaped from their confines of the buildings, they would then come across the hidden wall… ha-ha!.

Excellent title and shot BF. (We got too many weeping walls.) Really like the tonal transitions in this.

  • Belinda Fraser replied

Thanks Col. I was blessed with a break in the rain and some supurb light to grab this one. Next time you are up in Bright you will have to duck across to Beechworth to play at the old asylum.

Man, how interesting. Maybe thye should call it the “wailing wall!” Wonderful photo, Belinda

  • Belinda Fraser replied

Thanks John… it seems to get very quiet near the wall, but strangely you never feel alone.

Ahhh Beechworth. I grew up in wangaratta, so I spent a fair bit of time up there.(Not at mayday hills : )
Beechworth can be a spooky place at times.

    Cool pics.

I am from Albury – originally, nice to find a neighbour!! The asylum is a great place for pics, which is probably why it is a very popular place for weddings, though I am not sure I would be keen to get married amongst a heap of ‘lunatic’ ghosts…. hehehe.
