The Speaker's Mistake

A crowd of people filed into the massive conference hall.
The chandeliers were polished brass and paintings graced the wall.
They’d come to hear the message of a man they’d grown to love.
They knew him as someone who got his knowledge from above.
He made his way onto the stage, while listening to the cheers,
and noticed that his presence brought a few of them to tears.
The cheering stopped, then he began to talk to all the folks.
He started out by thanking them, and telling a few jokes.
“I’m glad that we all have this chance to gather here tonight.”
“There are some things that’s going on we really need to fight.”
“Like homelessness and poverty, and all the awful sin
that lesbians and gays have brought. There seems to be no end.”
The speaker told the story how he found the love of God.
But then he goofed, and said to spare the child and spoil the rod.
The moment that he realized that it had come out wrong
he tried to put the folks at ease and said, “This won’t take long.”
“I’m here today to take a stand against those stupid gays.”
“When will they see their life is bad and try to change their ways?”
“They think they have the right to live just anyway they choose.”
“They have to know the fight they’re in is one they’ll surely lose.”
A handful of the people in the hall began to clap.
But one stood up and said, “You’re mean! Your face I’d like to slap!”
The person that had told him this said that their son was gay.
“I do not care what you might think. I love him anyway.”
The speaker and this person soon began a long debate.
The person said, “You are a fake whose heart is full of hate!”
“It doesn’t matter just how bad you think the gays might be.”
“They have the right to be themselves and also to be free.”
The speaker looked around in shock, not knowing what to say.
He said, “This problem’s getting worse with every passing day.”
“We’ve got to round these faggots up and get them out of here.”
“I hope the rest of you will not support someone who’s queer.”
The speaker’s comments caused the crowd to lose control and yell.
He told them if their kids kids were gay that they would go to Hell.
“The God I serve will not allow these queers to stick around.”
The conference hall became so quiet you couldn’t hear a sound.
The people then began to leave which made the speaker cry.
“You folks all know that sin like this will surely make you die.”
When all the crowd had left the room, the speaker hung his head.
He thought, “I wish that I could take back all those things I said.”
The speaker sat and thought about his girl and his two boys.
When he prepared to finally leave, that’s when he heard a voice.
“I can’t believe you took the love I gave to you for free
and turned it into something that would bring great shame to me.”
The speaker turned around to find the one that spoke to him.
But when he looked there was no one, when the lights began to dim.
The voice called out to him once more and said, “You know my name.”
“You ought to do the things I say. My work is not a game.”
“I am the one who died for you, for everyone as well.”
“The things you said tonight could be YOUR ticket into Hell!”
“I did not save you with my grace so you could turn my words around.”
“If you persist in spreading hate, I’ll put you in the ground.”
“I do not want you saying things which are not in my word.”
“My grace extends to everyone. Is this not what you’ve heard?”
The speaker knew the voice was right. He’d lost sight of the goal.
He promised he would spread the love the Lord put in his soul.
We all must stop and think about the things we sometimes say.
The God above loves everyone even though they might be gay.
