Ziegfeld Girls ... Drucilla Strain 1929 by

Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. (March 21, 1867 – July 22, 1932), (sometimes also called “Flo” Ziegfeld), was an American Broadway impresario, notable for his series of theatrical revues, the Ziegfeld Follies (1907–1931), inspired by the Folies Bergère of Paris. He also produced the musical Show Boat. He was known as the “glorifier of the American girl”.

love the Ziegfeld Girls! I have an 50 year old book on the Ziegfeld Follies and I love looking at it. Some of the outrageous “modern” costumes just leave my jaw hanging. The photos of Anna Held, Lillian Lorraine and Olive Thomas in particular are fascinating to me.

  • Oh how lucky you are. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find some very good pictures of either of the 3. Anna died ad 46 and Olive only 25 – such short lives. Of course it seems outdated now but still holds a fascination – a kind of innocence for me even though I know it can’t have been a very satisfying life for them.

She was exceptionally beautiful. I saw the musical " The Great Ziegfield" with William Powell and Myrna Loy. In real life Florenz was a compulsive gambler which is why he took so many risks on Broadway but unfortunately it got the better of him in the end.

  • Yes I can imagine life was less glamorous than on the screen.
Addictions of any kind will do that to anyone who does not take charge of their lives.
Thank you for the comment John – much appreciated ☺
