I love this Kira. Youth fortifies us to some extent, infusing us with wild optimism, an unshakable belief in the inevitability of our future success, beliefs in an almost divine providence, and yet to leave the comforts and security of home at 18 to pursue a career in acting, especially in the early decades of the 20th Century when “acting” generall, and especially for women of the time, was often confused, and cruelly so, with other, less wholesome pursuits. To work on the stage, even in Shakespearean productions was the kiss of death for those who aspired to move within a different, typically higher ‘class’. So those that did were fiercely independent, self-confidant, often impervious to the barbs of others, and very courageous. I love the size of the suitcase with which she transports her belongings. It can’t hold much, but perhaps in 18 years she’d not had the wherewithal to acquire much. So much going on in this elegant, nostalgic, social statement image, wonderfully captured and composed. Classic.

Thank you Kevin for taking the time to write such an insightful comment. But I would expect nothing less from you.
It was nothing as high brow as Shakespeare. But she could have done worse. Started as a flapper in the chorus line – married the director of the travelling Theatre Company and they did Vaudeville for about 30 years all over Denmark during the Summer – living like gypsies in a wagon. I wont bore you with any more history – but they had a colorful life.

On the contrary, I’m not bored, I’m fascinated and filled with respect and admiration. My reference to Shakespeare was clumsily put. I meant that EVEN Shakespearean productions did not absolve the actors or insulate them from the snobbish stereotypes prevalent in those times. I imagined her in a career much as you describe. Although not a life for everyone, it seems a life I would have found to be fulfilling, entertaining, interesting, and at the end of the day – worthwhile. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful story

Thank you Kevin – you are so kind. On page 8 in my portfolio you can see a couple of more pictures of them and the flappers. And I plan on a portrait of my uncle who was one of those men who had a real talent for living – he was a character !!

WOW, Love old stuff like this. There used to be shops where you could go into, and you would find old photos, They have disappeared now. Great photo Kira.

Thank you for the lovely comment Ric – I’m lucky to have heaps of old photos of my family and ancestors – the quality varies of course – they don’t all make pictures of interest for others.
