United States of Wal-Mart T-Shirt

bchrisdesigns

United States of Wal-Mart

This is my entry to APG’s Weekend T-Shirt Challenge that asks designers to predict the future…250 years into the future to be exact. And, while many predict bleak glimpses and a few depict happy shiny places, I have chosen to depict the inevitable decline of our U.S. economy (because, at the rate it is going, we are almost there) into the era of “Land of the Free Gift with Purchase and Home of the Buyer.” That’s right, Wal-Mart will take over and rule the nation! But, hey, it’s already a bully, so maybe we’ll eventually gain world domination! And, who knows, maybe price cuts (aka “rollbacks”, in Wal-Mart lingo) and senior citizens greeting at the borders are what this country really needs?!?

Perhaps because with this you touch a raw nerve in people who can feel powerless against the all pervasive power of the corporations. An incisive comment on society – unfortunately in Australia we seem to be just a few steps behind. Personally I wish we would have a more balanced society not so driven by marketing gurus and consumerism.

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Oh, trust me, here in the U.S. it is all about capitalism and consumerism…whatever sells better and makes more money, and however we can make that thing cheaper…sometimes i get sad….i look around and all i see is big box retail stores…wal-mart, target, khols, best buy, etc…. they are everywhere… mom and pop business fail because they cannot compete…and so, everywhere you go (at least here in the burbs), it is all fake-looking mini-malls with over-priced stores who claim to be giving you a “good deal”…. all except Wal-Mart, which actually does give you a good deal, but at what cost? ugh. makes me want to cry. i guess i am just emotional…thanks for the comment!

Hi Macca’s is aussie for Mc Donalds in OZ any one with Mc before their name is somethimes called Macca lol
Oh and u can answer this for me maybe why so u guys call it ” Mickey D’s” i dont get that ….

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Mickey D’s evolved from the fact that we pronounce McDonald’s like “Mick Donalds” (as in the way you would say “Mickey Mouse”). I mean some places here pronounce it like “Mac Donalds” (as in “Macaroni”), but those people are saying just another slang form of it. A lot of people in California (and also in places like New York) say Mickey D’s because the full word would be pronounced like “Mick Donalds” -s o we just shorten it and make it cute…i mean…cool. Hehehehe… Hope that clears it up. Our slang here is sometimes off putting to people but once one understands it, they are down with it and think it is the shizz, fo sho. ;o)

Ha ha. I just randomly clicked on this in the A.R.S… I mean Parody, Satire and Lampoon… group and look… it’s yours! Pretty good shirt! (Wal-mart has had a tough time getting into Portland – they finally snuck one in on the fringes)

  • bchrisdesigns replied

oh, we are saturated with them here… there is one on every block… there is no such thing as independent business any more… its all walmart, costco, and target! lol! don’t let them into oregon! it is one of the places on my “gee, i’d like to live there one day” list! it seems like little guys succeed more there, especially artists.

    thanks for the great comments!!!!
