Have You Seen The New Five Dollar Bill?

Yeah, and Exxon gives you a free receipt with every purchase (while limited supplies last)! Oh, and every time you use sixteen of these new bills together, you get a full tank of gas!!!! What a deal!!!

I hope Dub-ya sees this! Wait…scratch that…he might think it is a nifty idea. Ugh.

Note: This is supposed to be a social commentary of the current state of our union, especially here in the expensive state of California, where this sad fact is almost true! Gas shortage my ass! Can you tell I am just a teeny bit bitter? :o)

A gallon of gas today in Indiana was $3.75. It will be $5.00 per gallon everywhere as the Summer travel season kicks in. Can you believe that I remember the Oil Embargo under President Carter. Gasoline jumped from $0.79 per gallon to $1.25 per gallon overnight, and we thought that was bad. Today I bought only 1/2 dozen eggs because one dozen eggs now costs almost $3.00. Milk is $5.00 for 1/2 gallon, and one loaf of store brand cheap bread cost $2.99.

When George Bush gets on the television and tells the nation not to worry, that’s exactly the moment that I start to worry.

  • bchrisdesigns replied

I would feel bad for ya, but those prices are good here in California. Here, you really gotta shop around to get those deals!!!! LOL! gas here is between $3.80-3.89 depending on what city you are in, how close to the freeway you are, and how far away from civilization you are. LOL! Milk is like 2 gallons for like $10 (if you are lucky) and bread is around $3.75 and up. It is so ridiculous!!! A dozen eggs…$4.00!!! And, the price of rice just sky rocketed because of a “shortage”.

Seems like sooooo many shortages happened under Dub-ya. It’s what happens when a President cares more about getting richer rather than running a country. And, the sad part….we let him do it…twice!!!

I’m pretty lucky here, for I can walk to grocer, train, restaurants, parks. It’s a pretty good walk but I could lose a few pounds. Forget about vacations and day trips. We’ll all have to go virtual. But my work as a construction secretary sometimes mean going on job sites. Poor guys paying through the nose for diesel fuel for their equipment; but then again, ain’t a lot of construction jobs going on here either.

meanwhile we are whingeing and bitching about petrol being around $1.40 to $1.50 a litre and a gallon is I think about 3.78 litres….... so you guys what you are paying for fuel still sounds cheap at $4 a gallon…... and I would imagine that your prices will go much much higher as you catch up to what other people pay for their petrol. Mind you we don’t look like were going to go in a recession here….. very strong little economy down under…... we give all new mothers a $5000 present when the baby comes….... tax free as well and have free universal health care for all…...

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Juilee, I know that at times it seems that us Americans are whining and complaining about our prices going up when things are much more xpensixe either you way you cross the ocean. However, we don’t have things like universal health care or tax breaks or even great government aid programs. Our minimum wage sucks, unemployment has sky rocketed, and so many people are losing their houses and cars everyday. It is really bad. Sure, it is more expensive for gas in other countries and so other countries don’t understand. But, when gas prices jump by the dollars in just s few years, that is scary! It is not what we are used to and many of us cannot afford it on what we make per hour at our jobs and there are so many of us who have tried to find jobs and there are not any. I used to have a awesome job and now I cannot get that same job for the same price anymore all because of our dear President! But, you know what… I now want to move down under…you all seem like a ton a fun with a great economy and beautiful land! Lucky!!! Here is California our livelihoods depends on driving cars. I wish I were in Australia or the UK right now! Your governments have it going on! Ours needs to learn from yours! LOL! True. True. :o) Thanks for the comment! Cheers!

Hi bchrisdesigns….. I do actually understand that this is a time of great angst in america….for most ordinary average people…. and that most people don’t earn much and you don’t have the same sort of safety nets in terms of social security as we do here…... and I can also understand that its a worrying time for most people as it really does seem like the storm clouds are gathering over your country….. we can see them pretty clearly from here so it must be much more anxious for you guys over there…..

And yes your current president seems to have ripped the heart out of the country with his insane war in iraq…... the costs of that alone are almost incomprehensible and will be felt for decades by the little people…..... I really do feel for you to be honest….. and I think its going to be getting a lot worse before it gets any better. We were really lucky to have booted out our old leader and gotten a much much better one…... and that’s great…. Hope you guys make a sensible choice and every body votes wisely for your next president….... it seems nuts to me that you are not compelled to vote there….. we get fined if we don’t show up to vote…...

And yes its a great place down here….. we’re not big players on the world scence down here but my goodness we have a really good standard of living and we value our creativity and our freedoms and are proud of our easy humour and tolerance of difference here….... lucky country indeed…... I wish you well with the bad times that seem poised to embrace your country…. the ramafications will be global….. so travel well

Maybe it’s time to use a touch less.
    see this

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Use a touch less? Our livelihoods depends on it, especially in the state of California. See, that is another thing that many other countries do not understand either. When the developers in your countries decided to build cities, they did it properly. Here in the U.S. (especially California), it is based on what is “cheaper” to do. So our cities where laid out with poor planning and sporadically and there is so much suburb here that it public transportation is useless and not really a viable option unless one works in the city and takes the metrolink. If you work out in the desert or beach areas or in the suburbs or the foothills, then you are screwed because in order to get there by bus, you have to leave like six hours early and take six different buses to get to your destination. Here EVERYONE needs a car to survive, and, thusly, everyone needs GAS! We don;t have a big choice. I lived in London for a semester and was impressed about how easily I could get around town WITHOUT a car and how efficient their public transportation is and it spoiled me! I came home and was so bummed that our systems is ridiculous! I hope that helps you to better understand that we are not just a society who uses so much gas because that is just how we roll, no…the last generation was not wise in who they voted into government office and those people made poor choices and now, the new generation are all paying for it through no fault of our own. :o)

  • BrainCandy

    BrainCandy

Mind you, you are still paying low prices for your fuel.
In OZ petrol at the moment is US$5.3/gal, but our incomes are considerably lower.

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Okay, but you cannot compare our two countries because yours has a strong economy right now. Ours is crap. There are no jobs. Our dollar is worthless. So to say that we are still paying lower for gas is s gross misunderstanding because while you are paying higher, you all can afford it. We don’t make enough to afford much of the prices that have gone sky high here and that is why people are losing everything…because we work hard but make poor wages. It sucks. The only people here who are making money are the rich. The middle class is the last class here.

  • BrainCandy

    BrainCandy

Just a couple of points to you last post.

What makes you assume that we can afford it?

Why is our economy strong at the moment? It’s because we sell uranium and highly polluting coal to China.

Our cites are equally badly planned and are sprawling like cancer, our “town planning” is based on your glorious example.

You can’t live without a car in Australia as well.

However the numbers are clear, 4% of the world population uses 20% of world resources.
Our cars are the biggest possible, over the last 30 years an average family shrunk by 50%, while houses increased in size by 100%. All the problems are our doing, are you driving the smallest, most efficient car you could buy, are you living in a small, well insulated house without heating and cooling?
And where I live (Victoria) according to our own research we are the highest (per capita) polluters in the whole world.

  • bchrisdesigns replied

Wow… for having all those issues you guys seem to handle it well! We could learn a lot from you all!!! I did not know so many things were bad there too. I’m sorry that we gave you guys bad planning examples…truly, it is very poor and pathetic planning on our parts and I don’t know what those engineers were thinking! LOL!

Also, no, i live i a two story house…a small house would not work for us because there are six people in the house due to the fact that four of us cannot afford to buy houses or rent apartments at the moment. That is how a lot of places are around here now… houses are full with people because no one can afford one by themselves. Most children are not moving out until their twenties or thirties because it is too expensive to even rent! It is sad.

But this should not be a “well in our country…this and this” type debate. I was making my assumptions based on what others who lived in your country have told me. Maybe they live in a different part as it is a big place like here? It seems like a great place to live because of so many good reasons that i have been told. Here, I would never recommend people living (in California that is) because it is horrible right now. So many people are moving to Texas! LOL! But, just like I should not base my presumptions on a few chats with people, you really should not base your presumptions on graphs and data that represent the country as whole. Our country is huge and people who live in New York, as opposed to Florida or Alaska or Hawaii or California all live very different lives because it is completely different and the demands and some of the laws and economies are much different…that is what we get for being so capitalistic, which I hate about us. Here we are more affected by gas price gouging than say New York is, bu New York is way more affected when taxi cab drivers strike and we are like “okay, so they are striking…” Not everywhere is like it is in California (and it is even different in the north, where the transportation system is much better than here in LA).

Trust me, we are not simply “whining” , as most other countries would have people believe we are. People watch “The O.C.” or “The Hills” and think that that is how it is here, but it is not. The truth is, that it actually costs a lot of money here to go “green”, to “conserve”, and to not “consume energy”... and, after all, we are all about what is “cheaper” here. It seems like here, “conservation” is something that rich people do to make themselves feel better. LOL! Isn’t that sad? Ugh. We need to get our acts together, huh!!! LOL!

BTW, I am all for going green and conserving, but when places make a “green” shopping bag and then turn around and sell it for $5.99 because recycling and conserving is “trendy”, then that is a sad-sad commentary on our country… thanks Paris Hilton!!! LOL!

ugh…I remember the week the gas prices shot up in south Cali. I drove a v8 dodge ram for work as a cable installer….in a week it went from like 3.50 to nearly 5 bucks at arco….I quit that job rather quickly. they didn’t reimburse enough on the gas to make it worth my time.

  • bchrisdesigns replied

it was so crazy!!!!! it made me so mad!!! lol! i am glad that now it has gone down a little, but still!!! i think i am going to vote for that prop 1A so that we can get some trains going because that would be so much better! :)
