For you younger people… in the olden days, people used to wash clothes, but they had no dryer, then they would take clothes pins and hang the wet clothes on a line strung between two trees, or two poles. Sometimes it would take all day for the clothes to dry, then about suppertime mother would send out the children to get in the clothes while she cooks..

Oh yes it does Barb! This is wonderful dear Sis! I love the bright colors and contrast!

  • Thanks for allowing me to bring back some memories of yesteryear. I guess i am fascinated by this because for the most part it’s something from the past…. i remember the first time i slept on sheets from the dryer…. they were so soft… at home, ours were always kinda stiff… but they sure smelled good!! Thanks for your lovely response, Sis!

Oh, yes! And, most of all, I remember the wonderful fresh smell of washed bedsheets that had dried on line in a bright sunny and slightly breezy day. Not a man made thing does the same in a dryer, today! Thanks for the memory, my friend. :-)

  • Thanks for allowing me to bring back such a good memory for you, but you have to sacrifice softness for the wonderful smell…. the sheets that i remember were very rough and stiff… and i also remember my mom making me IRON the pillowcases…. i think maybe ironing made them less rough…. my mom died in 2000…. and she never had a dryer… she hung clothes out on the line her whole life! Thanks for your great response!

  • Glad you walked with me, sis…. i am so attracted to clothes on a line like this…. but i would never want to hang out clothes, i like the softness of the dryer!! and the fake smell of freshness… hahaha… love ya!

Not only the sight but the smell, cloths hung out in the sun to dry smell so good. Fresh and clean. My job because I was tall even as a young lad was to use a wash cloth and clean the metal wire really well before the ladies hung the cloths.

  • you were such a good boy back then, bro… i’m so glad you were taller than me… i couldn’t even help take the clothes down… but they made me help fold them!!! Thanks for allowing me to take you down memory lane!

And in the wintertime…they might be stiff as a board! LOL…You can tell which of us are OLD!

  • Pauline!!! we are not old… we just read about this stuff… right??? lol…. i remember them being stiff… and rough…. no fabric softener as good as i can remember…. my mom was a stay at home mom, and she didn’t really require me to do much around the house… make up my bed, and help wash dishes… that’s about it…. but ….. when i got married, i didn’t know the first thing about cooking…. it was a rough time for us then… but i learned…. remind me to tell you the gravy story!

We still do this – nothing like crawling in bed to fresh air sheets.

  • I’m so glad to meet you, Rose, and to know that there are still people that prefer fresh sheets off the line! I guess now that we have fabric softner, the sheets aren’t as stiff and rough as they were when i was growing up! Nice to meet you!

Wow, this just ran through my mind a couple of days ago! I wondered how long it would actually take me to wash clothes in a tub (or in the river, on rocks) and then hang the clothes instead of just throwing them in the washing machine. ;) Must be springtime brings back memories. Mom used to hang the laundry. I loved running through them, especially the sheets! Yep, good old days!

  • what an honor to be able to bring back such wonderful memories, Cherie!! I would have loved to run thru the clothes and sheets…. but if i had gotten caught doing it, my mom would have tanned my hide (so to speak!). Thanks so much for your lovely response, my friend… I miss you when you aren’t around…. i think of you often!! love ya!
