Last year, we had a big problem with hornets and yellow jackets in our apple tree. A friend suggested we try beer…. but Mike (my husband) being the trooper that he is, volunteered to buy some beer, and sacrifice a half bottle to see if it worked…
Needless to say, it worked like a charm… he tied a string around the neck of the bottle, and hung it in the apple tree. By the next day, we didn’t see any hornets or yellow jackets on the tree… but the bottle had many in it…. i presume by the varmits going into the bottle and not able to get out, so they drank the beer, got drunk and drowned… in this picture you can only see the ones that are still floating, but believe me… the bottle was half full of those insects!

Only you could make ART out of dead hornets in beer!! But….great information! I’ll have to remember. I have to admit, I haven’t had the problem but if I do…well, I guess I’ll just have to waste a beer!! Great shot, by the way….the colors are great!!

  • I really didn’t think it would work… but it did, and it worked great!! Thanks so much for your lovely response… i’ve taken several pictures into bottles… and for some reason they all turn out pretty good!! big hugs, sis!!

What a great perspective and a great closeup. Better idea than what I did to get rid of the last hornets nest I had to deal with☺

  • I would say so!! i think you should give this a try… i didn’t see any honey bees in the bottle…. just hornets and yellow jackets… wouldn’t mind catching the bumblebees… but didn’t see any of those either… i have never been stung by a hornet… but if one gets in your house, use the vacuum cleaner to catch them… i’ve never missed!! lol… hope you have a great Independence Day!!!

We do the same for slugs, they decimate out vegetable patch leaving us hungry. (Not really, we have 4 supermarkets within walking distance!) At least their demise is during an alcoholic haze.

The image is intriguing, and it is just possible to see some of the little varmints under the surface. But the lighting on the bottle provides a colourful image. Great work and good for you and the apples.

  • Thanks, my friend…. love your sense of humor!! You are too funny… Thanks for your fantastic response to my photo… but mostly for your friendship! hugs,
