ABOUT THIS IMAGE
The side wall of lovely Christ Church Anglican Church (circa 1839) at the little town of Bungonia
was photographed bathed in warm sunlight during the recent RedBubble Rumble, based at Goulburn
over the September – October long weekend. The Church is listed on the State Heritage Register
Bungonia was settled earlier than Goulburn and was an important stopover point in the 1820’s. However,
the town lost its commercial significance after Major Mitchell made the decision in 1833 to re-route the
Sydney-Goulburn Road and bypass the town.
Bungonia is now a pleasant stopping place en route to the Bungonia State Recreation Area. Apart from
this lovely stone Church, there are several other examples of early historic buildings including Courthouse
(circa 1834), Hope Inn (1837-71), Victorian Inn (1872-1919) and the less attractive St Michael’s Catholic
Church (started 1839 and consecrated 1847), possibly the oldest Catholic Church in Australia.
