Rocks and Stones … February 2012
Monterosso is a town in the province of La Spezia, part of the region of Liguria, Italy. It is one of the five villages of the World Heritage Site Cinque Terre which was devastated by heavy flooding and mudslides on October 25, 2011. The town is divided into two distinct parts, the old town and the new town, which are joined by a single tunnel that caters to pedestrians, bicycles and the very few cars in the town. The beach at Monterosso runs along most of the coast line and is well used by tourists and locals. The beach is the only extensive sand beach in the Cinque Terre. In the summer months it is very popular with tourists. The area is famous for its many lemon trees that can be seen throughout Monterosso, as well as for its white wines, grapes, and olives.
Monterosso means red mountain and the village may have been named for the wonderful colour of the rock as seen in this image of an ancient archway, which may no longer exist after the devastating floods in October 2011.

Further research reveals that much progress has been made and although by no means
restored fully, there is hope that Cinque Terre will soon be accessible to tourists, at least
from the sea. Restoration of roads, tracks and rail will take longer, but ferries depart
Portovenere and hopefully will call at all five villages again soon.

Thank you so much for your lovely words and for adding this image to your favourites ! Much of Monterosso and Vernazza was under about two and a half metres of mud and debris, but the restoration seems to be progressing well.
